How to Repair Leather Lounge

Leather is a durable material and an expensive one too. It can easily give you a life of more than a decade, but at some point in time, it will start wearing down. However, you might counter some troubles in between, too, such as minor nicks, tears, or deep cuts.

Here is a quick guide to leather lounge repairs.

Cut a piece of sub patch
If the tear is deep and exposes the substrate under the leather, you will need a leather "sub patch" to fix it. If you do not have a designated leather patch, a piece of leather, vinyl, or any other strong mending fabric will do. Cut a piece of the size slightly larger than the hole, and round the corner for easy insertion. Insert the patch beneath the hole, ensuring that it completely covers the hole.

Glue the patch to the leather
After inserting, use a toothpick or earbud to apply leather or fabric glue to the underside of the leather, which is in contact with the patch. After applying the glue, press the leather onto the sub patch and pull the tear to its original shape.

Note: In the case of a minor nick, you can directly glue the torn ends of the surface and press them to their original shape. After applying the glue, apply weight to the area with a block of wood or heavy book for twenty to thirty minutes.

Clean the area
After the area has dried, clean it with a leather cleaner or 70% isopropyl alcohol. Cleaning is essential to ensure the surface bonds well with the leather filler.

Trim away loose fibers
Once you clean the surface, there might be a few fragments of leather fibers popping out. Use a small scissor or cutter to carefully trim them away.

Apply leather filler
If you notice any gap between the torn edges, spread a small amount of leather filler with the help of a palette knife. After application, use a paper towel to remove any excess filler. Once the filler has dried, dye the repaired area with a dye of the colour of the sofa.

Conclusion
Repairing a leather lounge is easy but cumbersome and time-consuming. Sofa Doctor offers affordable and sustainable leather lounge repairs that provide your sofa the original look and feel, along with increasing its longevity.
