Looking for antique furniture repair gold coast? Have you ever wondered how furniture became part of our lives? How furniture collection and restoration became an art? Let's check out :
The history of furniture
When humans (homo sapiens) first walked the earth, made frequent movements and led a nomadic lifestyle. The continual change of place meant that large, non-portable items of furniture were irrelevant. Instead, our ancestors experimented with whatever natural objects were present close to them, using these objects to form the very first furniture such as chairs and tables out of rocks and tree stumps.
With the advent of the agricultural revolution, the hunter-gatherer inhabitants gradually began to use the land around them for farming and formed permanent settlements around them. These new settled farming communities could now craft essential pieces of furniture from natural resources and keep them in a permanent location. The agricultural societies crafted pieces of furniture – usually carved from wood, stone or animal bones. Practically no evidence survives of these earliest furniture creations because they were primarily made from perishable elements. One exception to this is the Neolithic village of Skara Brae in Scotland. Dating from 3100-2500 BC, every house at Skara Brae exhibits an impressive range of sophisticated stone furniture, including beds, shelves, cupboards and dressers.
Industrial Revolution, Furniture in the 20th Century and Collecting Antiques
In the 19th Century, the industrial revolution affected all areas of society, especially manufacturing, and this had an increasingly noticeable impact on furniture making and consumption. The trend continued into the 20th Century with further mechanical developments and inventions. The mechanisation and design of materials such as plastics reduced the cost and dependence from artisans.
These developments concurred with the changes in style away from those of the 19th Century. Art Deco and then Modernism followed the Arts and Crafts movement and Art Nouveau.
Minimalism as a design idea grew through the second half of the 20th Century, and possibly best reflects the move away from the perfection of detail and qualities associated with French furniture of the 18th and 19th Centuries. Instead, these old items, which differed significantly with the modern creations of the day, were now considered as unique one-of-a-kind pieces, with the craft and skill employed in their production celebrated as an art form.  The practice of collecting valuable products of old furniture found favour, and it became common to relinquish these objects of furniture down through the generations.
